Children of War

Though children can barely carry AK 47’s and Bazookas, they often make better soldiers than adults, because of their unquestioning loyalty . Have you ever wondered why children are mobilized by countries as their last line of defense against invaders?

The infamous PolPot used comrade-children, comrades who were pure and unsullied by the corrupt past of adults, to murder thousands in his bloody revolution, where over one million Cambodians were murdered and over two million more died of starvation aand obedience. Warlords have greatly depended on them throughout history and have used their innocence and inexperience to conquer their enemies. Warlords like PolPot often saved their best troops for last, and many hopeless battles were turned into undeniable victories because of children-soldiersnd exhaustion in labor camps. PolPot and his thugs forced children to denounce and kill their elders and at the age of twelve, many of these comrade-children managed labor camps where they inflicted severe violence against adult inmates. Pol Pot separated children from parents and brainwashed them to hate their families and relatives. He understood the hidden resentment these children had for adults and how, by fueling their hatred for authority, he could set them lose against his enemies. Thus, he overtook his country on April 1975, with a huge gang of young teenagers called the Khmer Rouge. Through these obedient subjects, Pol Pot murdered one-third of the population in less than four years. His country became a vast forced labour camp, and turned into a peasant economy without class divisions, money, books, schools and hospitals.
Adolf Hitler, the lunatic leader of Germany, mobilized the Jungvolk (boys 10 to 14 years old) and Hitler-Youth (14 to 18 years old) to defend Germany against the invading allies during the Second World War. When the war started, the Hitler Youth alone totaled 8.8 million, but these numbers changed dramatically as the war progressed when Youth leaders of draft age where drafted into the army and when the Jungvolk and Hitler Youth united into a single organization.

Because of the dwindling supply of manpower, Adolf Hitler formed the 12th SS-Panzer Division Hitlerjugend, consisting of 15, 16 and 17 year old boys. Ten thousand boys were trained in Beverloo, Belgium, and on D-Day, June 6, 1944, they were sent to fight the Allies in Normandy. On May 8, 1945, remnants of the 12th SS-Panzer Division, consisting of only 455 boy soldiers and one tank, finally surrendered to the American 7th Army. By the end of the war, over 9,000 of these boys were either dead or missing in action.
That’s not all. When the Russians invaded Berlin at the end of the war, 5,000 German boys armed with rifles and Panzerfausts, fought the Soviet Army maniacally at the Pichelsdorf bridges. After five days of battle, 4,500 children were either killed or wounded. Many of them committed suicide rather than be captured by the Red Army.

Why violate the rights of children and turn them into cold- blooded murderers? What happened to us? Are we truly civilized? Are we truly children of GOD? Do we truly have souls?

Sometimes, being human is simply beyond my comprehension.

My wife and I decided to bring our four year old child, Rochelle Marie, to Baguio last Saturday, and as expected, she enjoyed the city, the climate, the horses, and most especially the people. We hope to teach her much about Filipino culture, especially the Ifugao and Igorot cultures, before their customs and traditions fade away into history and are replaced by television, video games, and rock and roll. These senior citizens charged us Php 130 pesos (10 pesos each) for the photo because they really needed money, as they have no other sources of income. Their ancestral lands were either sold or taken away from them many years ago and I doubt if our government is doing anything to help them out today. They really need our help. So, go to Baguio whenever you can and visit them. - Baguio City, May 2, 2009

Snippets: Sports and Children

Any sport teaches kids the values of discipline, perseverance, courage, humility, obedience, patience, and most of all, cooperation and love, values that take a longer time to develop within the four walls of a university classroom.

This is why schools and universities all over the world have already recognized Olympic Sports as more effective ways to develop a child's Bodily-Kinesthetic, Spatial, Interpersonal and Intrapersonal intelligences. (There are seven multiple intelligences known to man.)

Perhaps, this is the reason why many child athletes tend to be great leaders when they grow up. Primary Examples: 1.U.S. President Obama plays basketball; 2. Russian President Vladimir Putin plays Judo. He holds an advanced blackbelt degree in this martial art and sport; 3. England's Margaret Thatcher played hockey and swimming earlier in her life; 4. Governor Arnold Swarzenneger is a competitive bodybuilder; 5. And Saint John Paul II, the late Pope and Holy Father of the Holy Catholic Church, played skiing, swimming, cayaking, boxing and mountaineering.

So, introduce your kids to sports. It is worth it.
